New Campus Use Permit Application Submitted

On November 17, 2014 the school submitted its use permit zoning application to Sonoma County's Permit and Resource Management Department, completing a nearly year-long process of architectural and landscaping design work, environmental study and engineering, neighborhood community outreach, and collaboration with interested stakeholders. The use permit application requests zoning approval to operate a public school on the Hurlbut Avenue site, and includes a master plan of the new campus, landscape and sustainability designs, illustrative building renderings and elevations, and a detailed project proposal and preliminary design narrative.

From the project proposal statement:

Since its founding nearly 20 years ago, the school has held the vision of housing all its students on a unified, spacious, and more rural campus. The site of Sebastopol Charter’s new campus, on 20 largely undeveloped acres just north of Sebastopol, offers the realization of that vision as an ideal home for the school, with easy access by car from Hwy 116, and by bicycle and foot from the adjacent Rodota Trail.

Though depleted by years of overgrazing, the gently rolling property provides ample room for students to move freely, explore, and help restore the land with native habitats, gardens, orchards, and a farm. The site also affords the school room to develop sports fields, and an assembly hall for the students’ education in music, arts and drama.

The fully developed campus will occupy slightly less than half the full 20 acre site. The remaining agricultural and open spaces surrounding the campus will create a natural, protective environment for the students, and provide privacy buffering for the neighbors.

One of the first Waldorf-inspired charters in the nation, this public school has proven itself a responsible, valued, and integral member of the greater Sebastopol community for two decades. Sebastopol Charter welcomes the opportunity to establish its permanent home – a small school on a large site – on this land where it can continue providing an academically and artistically rich public education to this and future generations of children.

You can download the full project proposal, as well as the preliminary design narrative for a complete description of the school project as proposed.

This is an exciting period in the school's history as we come ever closer to realizing our dream of a larger, unified campus. We anticipate that the public hearing on our use permit application will be held in approximately 10 months.

Master Plan

In fulfillment of the school’s vision held since its founding 19 years ago, the new campus finally unifies the whole school community of kindergarten through eighth grade – now housed on two campuses over a mile apart – on a single campus. The school envisions an educational home that celebrates community, honors childhood, and educates the whole child in a natural setting and built environment that by design teaches respect for nature, resources, and one another.

Sustainable Design

Sustainable design is an important value of the Sebastopol Charter School community. The new campus incorporates the principles of right-sizing (building only what is needed), passive-design, and use of local and natural resources.

Open, Community Oriented Design

The proposed building forms are straightforward and inspired by vernacular agricultural structures and barns. Courtyards and paths throughout the site provide a common, outdoor space for students.
